GCSE students complaining about exams is nothing new – but a maths question about sweets has prompted students to vent their anger on Twitter.
The exam saw students tackling the question above about a girl called Hannah taking an orange sweet from a bag at random.
Pupils took to Twitter after the exam to complain that the question was too difficult, saying it was harder than the past papers they had been revising with.
Edexcel’s owner Pearson said it aimed to “test the full range” of abilities, but it said it would ensure students were “treated fairly” when the papers are marked.
How did n-90=0 related to Hannah and her sweets??? #EdexcelMaths

Why would Hannah choose orange and yellow sweets. They are the worst tasting ones. At least red and purple come on love. #EdexcelMaths

A Pearson spokesperson said: “Our exam papers are designed by an experienced team of expert teachers with a deep understanding of the subject matter.
“They make sure our papers are set at the appropriate level to test the full range of students’ abilities.
“In the event that any one paper turns out to be more or indeed less challenging than usual, our marking and grading process always ensures students are awarded the grades they deserve.
GCSE pupils should however spare a thought for fellow students in China – who are sitting the Gaokao. The test lasts for two days and is dubbed the “the world’s toughest exam”.
