England defeat Poland to reach World Cup

Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard scored to send England to the World Cup finals with a 2-0 victory over Poland, taking the top spot in qualifying Group H at Wembley.

Rooney scored 41st-minute goal following a patient England build-up with Leighton Baines crossing for the Manchester United striker, who nodded the ball down and wide of keeper Wojciech Szczesny.

The match was on a knife-edge as anything less than a win could have consigned England to a difficult two-legged playoff tie with group rivals Ukraine cruising to victory over San Marino.

Midfielder Gerrard sparked English celebrations in the 88th minute bursting into the area, he cut inside and put the ball past Szczesny. England are top of the section with 22 points, with Ukraine second on 21.
