The bodies of a police officer and a woman have been recovered in separate locations after yesterday’s flooding in Dublin. In the UK, there are flood alerts in Yorkshire, the west country and Wales.
Search teams trying to locate missing police officer Ciaran Jones have discovered a body close to the location where he was swept away yesterday evening.
The 25-year-old garda had been helping to keep people safe from dangerous floods at Ballysmuttan bridge, over the River Liffey, at around 7pm yesterday. A major search and rescue operation was launched following his disappearance.
Meanwhile, the body of a woman been found by Irish police in a flooded basement in Dublin after water was pumped from the premises.
Huge swathes of the east of Ireland were hit by almost a month’s rain in 24 hours.
There will be more heavy rain in parts of Britain today after downpours caused localised flooding in western parts of the British Isles yesterday.

Flood warnings are in place for Scarborough, North Yorkshire, and for Bridlington, East Yorkshire.
The Environment Agency has also issued flood alerts for rivers and coastal areas in Cornwall and Devon, as well as parts of Wales.
“Any lingering rain across England and Wales will clear this morning,” a spokesman for MeteoGroup said, “but across northern and eastern Scotland it will linger for much of the day. There will be some heavy and prolonged outbursts there.
“Following that rain there will be sunny spells and showers, some of which will be quite heavy, and possibly some lightning strikes.”
Rain and high winds across the whole of the UK resulted in flood warnings for parts of the North Sea coast in Yorkshire and at Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire last night.
Localised flooding was reported across Cornwall and parts of west Devon. Cornwall’s highways and environment services department received more than 300 calls about incidents caused by the severe weather over a period of a few hours yesterday.
Torbay seafront was closed to traffic yesterday afternoon because of fears over flooding caused by the high tide.
Monday also saw winds of up to 60mph across Shetland and Orkney, where further strong gales are expected today.
