An emotional Amanda Knox returns to the United States after four years in an Italian prison, as supporters cheer her arrival in Seattle.
Ms Knox arrived home yesterday evening after her conviction for murdering 21-year-old Meredith Kercher was overturned in an Italian court.
Holding back tears, Ms Knox thanked her supporters and said she would be going back to her family home before deciding what to do next.
“What’s important for me to say is just thank you to everyone who has believed in me, who has defended me, who has supported my family,” she said.
“My family is the most important thing to me right now and I just want to go and be with them. So thank you for being there for me.”
If her first public address since her release from Perugia’s Capanne prison, Ms Knox said she was “overwhelmed” and had to remember to speak in English rather than Italian. “I am really overwhelmed right now, I was looking down from the aeroplane and it seemed like everything wasn’t real,” she said.
Ms Knox spoke at a press conference at Seattle International Airport, supported by her defence lawyer Theodore Simon and her parents.
Mr Simon said the Italian court’s decision was “bold and courageous”, and added: “Let us not forget that Meredith was Amanda’s friend and I know that Amanda and the family want us to remember Meredith and to keep the Kercher family in our prayers.”
Kyle, the brother of murdered student Meredith Kercher, said yesterday: “We are now obviously left wondering who is the other person or people [who killed Meredith], and really, for us, it feels very much almost like back to square one.”
