Police believe two intruders entered the house threatening the 39 year old man, who was alone when the incident occurred last night.
His wife and 12 year old son returned home during the incident but were unharmed.
The second intruder fled the scene.
Police have appealed for the public to help trace the second intruder. Some local residents however have voiced support the homeowner for defending his family and property.
The incident comes after David Cameron’s promise in February to change the law to allow householders to use “legitimate” force to protect their homes without fear of being prosecuted.
