Police investigating the case arrested the man on suspicion of conspiracy to intercept voicemail messages and attempting to pervert the course of justice.
The Metropolitan Police said they were holding the man in police custody in connection with Operation Weeting.
He was arrested after visiting a North London police station around midday on Friday.
He is the fifteenth suspect to be arrested over the phone hacking allegations which have seen two people jailed and resulted in the closure of Rupert Murdoch‘s Sunday tabloid, The News of the World.
A series of high-profile figures have been arrested, including former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks and the former Downing Street communications chief Andy Coulson.
Last month, a 51-year-old detective was arrested over leaking information during the investigation and suspended by his own force.
The detective was released on bail and is due to return on 29 September.
