The area was cordoned off after the suicide attack, the latest outbreak of violence in Pakistan since the killing of Osama bin Laden.

Security officials said it was car blast in which a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the police station building. They said a portion of the building collapsed, and efforts are underway to retrieve bodies from the rubble (pictured).

It is the third attack on the same police station, which houses the Crimes Investigation Department (CID). In the past, the police station has been attacked with planted bombs and rockets.

Crucial role

The police personnel of CID have played a crucial role in the fight against terrorism in Pakistan, including tracking down several militant leaders and suicide bombers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Behind the police building is Pakistan‘s army parachute training centre, but military officials said the soldiers there remained safe.
