The conflict began on 7 October 2001 with the launch of Operation Enduring Freedom. In the first five years the vast majority of coalition deaths were American. Only five UK personnel died between April 2002 and early March 2006.The UK toll began to rise quickly when British troops were deployed to Helmand in 2006.
