As the England women’s team prepare to take on France tonight in the Women’s World Cup we look at the huge disparity in pay between the sexes in football.
England Captain Steph Houghton says England have the belief to win the Women’s World Cup in Canada this summer.
On the eve of her side’s opening Group F clash against France in Moncton, Manchester City’s Houghton was confident the Lionesses have what it takes to go all the way in the showpiece.
In a live press conference she said: “We can’t come to a tournament and not believe.
“We know that we’ve prepared fully and worked hard and we believe and trust in the game plan the manager’s given us. If we stay together….there’s no doubt we’ve got some players that have got world-class ability and it’s all about performance.
“As a captain of this side, I fully believe we have the players to potentially go all the way.
“We know we have some world-class opposition to face and we’ve got to concentrate on one game at a time and that’s France tomorrow, who are a team we have to respect.
“They’ve been at the top of their game for the last three or four years.”
