36 dead as wildfires tear through Hawaiian island of Maui

We are hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst, Hawaii fire chiefs have warned – as the devastating wildfires which have swept through Maui island continue to burn.

36 people are so far known to have died, and hundreds of buildings have been destroyed, with the historic town of Lahaina resembling a war zone.

President Biden has declared a major disaster, triggering Federal aid.
