5.3m people waiting for operation or treatment with NHS under pressure to handle backlog

Today saw new data on waiting times for the NHS in England. Over 5.3 million people were waiting for an operation or routine treatment in May – a record figure for a second successive month, but the numbers seeking treatment are returning to pre-pandemic levels.

I went to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Essex to see how staff are coping as they deal with clearing the backlog.
