BA retires 747 fleet amid coronavirus downturn

The Boeing 747 was once known as the Queen of the Skies. But now British Airways, which operated the world’s biggest fleet of the 747-400 jets, is retiring them with immediate effect.

The firm told staff that the decision to take the planes out of service was due to the downturn in travel caused by the Coronavirus pandemic – especially transatlantic trips. Thousands of BA pilots and crew are already facing redundancy as the airline slashes costs.
