Bafta 2014: who should win?

British film director Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave gets 10 Bafta nominations, with other films in the running for a fruitful awards night including American Hustle, Captain Phillips and Gravity.

12 Years a Slave has been nominated for a host of categories including “Film of 2014”, “Leading Actor”, “Supporting Actor” and “Supporting Actress”. Other contenders for the film of the year accolade are American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Gravity and Philomena.

Chiwetel Ejiofor, who plays a free man kidnapped and sold into slavery in America’s deep south, is nominated for leading actor, alongside Bruce Dern for Nebraska, Christian Bale for American Hustle, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wolf Of Wall Street and Tom Hanks for Captain Phillips.

The leading actress category features Amy Adams for American Hustle, Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine, Emma Thompson for Saving Mr Banks, Judi Dench for Philomena and Sandra Bullock for Gravity.

Who do you want to win?

Channel 4 News asked social media users to say who they think the 2014 Baftas should go to. The lucky actors and actresses who topped the poll were:

  • Supporting Actress – Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle (with 54 per cent of the vote)
  • Supporting Actor – Michael Fassbender, 12 Years a Slave (with 44 per cent of the vote)
  • Leading Actress – Sandra Bullock, Gravity (with 27 per cent of the vote)
  • Leading Actor – Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave (with 43 per cent of the vote)

Those surveyed also voted for Gravity to win the “Outstanding British film of 2014” Bafta, giving it 32 per cent of the vote. The overall best film of the year accolade, the top gong of the February awards, should go to 12 Years a Slave, those polled said. The film recieved 55 per cent of the vote.
