Birmingham City Council declares itself ‘effectively bankrupt’

Birmingham City council, the biggest local authority in the country, has effectively declared itself bankrupt with a formal notice of financial distress.

The council’s been struggling to fund a close to one billion pound equal pay settlement, as well as complications over a new IT system and a decade of Government spending cuts.

Council leaders have now asked for help with their budget shortfall.
