Cameron sets out his vision for Britain

Vote Tory and we will wield the axe, you will be involved and your services will get better.

That was David Cameron’s message this morning after a marathon four-hour build-up. The basic state guarantee of standards, the whole 20th-century experiment, has suffocated progress and needs to be broken up or loosened depending on how much you think will really be achieved.

David Cameron got quite passionate in his answer to my question about the willingness of people to be prized away from the telly or the garden to run the country, but our traditions here are not strong.

Churches in America do a lot of the organisational heavy-lifting. Here vacancies for parent-school governerships officially run at 5 per cent unfilled for six months-plus but you hear anecdotally of a bigger shortage, likewise in trust posts and others.

David Cameron now heads off to rehearse his lines for the Thursday debate when you can expect to hear a lot more about the big government politicians insulting the intelligence of the people by pretending they can sort it all.
