Graham Brady elected 1922 Committee chairman
Graham Brady has got the job of 1922 chairman by 126 to 85 for Richard Ottoway.
This was what David Cameron risked a lot of goodwill trying to avoid with his attempted nationalisation of the 1922 Committee.
He won some praise for backing down but one former minister said the Prime Minister had proved he was “amoral” with his approach to the ballot. Big cheers in the Committee Room just now.
One of Graham Brady’s supporters said David Cameron had effectively been a “great campaign manager”. It’s a sign of trouble ahead that the other elected officials of the ’22 are right-wingers who opposed the Cameron coup attempt and are considered on the party right.
Graham Brady, in a short statement, referred to the honour of getting the job in “these difficult circunstances” – by which it’s thought he meant the glorious new politics coalition.
