Lib Dem conference: should taxes rise, or fall?

Vince Cable has just told the conference: “You live in a low-tax economy.”

But his position is still that taxes should come down. What he was talking about was the current tax take, which is pretty thin.

The Lib Dem leadership position remains that the overall tax burden (in normal economic peacetime) is too high but given the doo-doo we’re in it might have to rise.

Chatting to delegates coming out of the hall I found most still think the overall (peacetime) tax burden is too low.

The people’s chancellor, as Dr Cable was dubbed, didn’t mention tuition fees by the way.
