Will we ever learn the full truth?

Is there a cover-up under way over the 400 extra deaths at the Stafford Hospital?

The NHS has accepted that at least 400 more people died at the hospital between 2005 and 2008 than would be normal.

Some estimates extend that figure to 1200.

The pressure to find out why has resulted in the setting up of an independent inquiry under Robert Francis QC. But he has now deemed the inquiry be held in private.

The Care Quality Commission which seems to have replaced the Health Commission has also held its inquiry in private – an inquiry whose has at least publicly admitted that initial checks on patients were carried out by unqualified receptionists.

A solicitor representing the pressure group Cure the NHS (CtN), Richard Stein has called for the terms of the new inquiry to be extended and for the hearings to be held in public.

So far Mr Francis is resistant to the call.

But the pressure for a re-think is building.
