Dzhokhar Tsarnaev guilty of carrying out Boston bombing
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been found guilty of killing three people and injuring 265 in the 2013 Boston marathon bombings.
Jurors reached the verdict after a more than 12 hours of deliberations over two days. Former college student Tsarnaev, was found guilty of all 30 charges he faced, including using a weapon of mass destruction.
Tsarnaev’s lawyers admitted he participated in the bombings, but said his now-dead older brother was the driving force behind the attack. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, was killed following a gunfight with police in Watertown, Massachusetts.
Jurors must now decide whether 21-year-old Tsarnaev should now face the death penalty or spend the rest of his life in prison.
During the next phase of the trial, Tsarnaev’s lawyers will present evidence they hope will save his life. That could include evidence about his family, his relationship with his brother, and his childhood in the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan and later in the volatile Dagestan region of Russia.
Jeffrey Bauman, who lost both his legs as a result of the Boston bombing said: “Today’s verdict will never replace the lives that were lost and so dramatically changed, but it is a relief, and one step closer to closure.”
