Still on course for mid-month warmth
Following my blog a few days ago about spring finally springing towards mid-month, I thought that I’d give you a quick update on what’s to come over the next 10 days.
The jet stream that has been so unusually far south over Iberia, the Mediterranean and north Africa during March, will slide northwards during the next week.
This means that the typical mixed spring weather of rain, showers and higher temperatures that has been eluding us for so long, will finally reach our shores.
This weekend
Before the change starts to take place, this weekend is going to be settled for most places, thanks to a big area of high pressure sitting over us.
Also, the brisk and raw wind that we’ve had lately will ease, meaning that with strength in the April sunshine, it will actually feel quite pleasant – despite temperatures still being below average at 7-10C.
However, with clear skies and lighter winds, nights will be colder, with harder frosts as temperatures widely drop to around -3C.
Next week
From Monday onwards, the weather across the UK will turn much more unsettled, as the jet stream slides northwards, steering areas of low pressure towards us.
As a result, showers or longer spells of rain accompanied by a brisk wind will be the main theme of our weather.
Even though temperatures will gradually rise to 6-12C, I think less cold is a better description for how the weather will feel, rather than mild.
Next weekend
While there is still an element of uncertainty with the detail, there are still signs for high pressure to build across the UK next weekend.
The key to how warm it gets will depend on the orientation of the high pressure system. At the moment, it looks like it will bring winds from a southerly quarter from Iberia, which would bring a burst of warmth – especially to England and Wales.
If all goes to plan, temperatures could reach 14-18C, with a possibility of somewhere reaching 20C.
Given the seemingly never ending winter that we’ve experienced, such warmth will no doubt be very welcome.
