Summer set to bounce back with temperatures approaching 30C
The weekend delivered some pleasant spells of sunshine for much of the country, but there was no denying the chill in the air during the mornings and evenings – a subtle reminder that autumn is just around the corner.
However, this week, we can put autumn back in the box, with summer set to bounce back and bring another burst of heat – especially across England and Wales, where the temperature will get close to 30C on Wednesday and Thursday.
September is renowned for its variable nature, as autumn and summer battle it out for supremacy. This week, summer wins – at least for a short time.
The reason for summer fighting back is the position of the jet stream – the fast-moving ribbon of air high up in the atmosphere that drives the weather that we experience at the surface.
For the first part of this week it is going to sit to the north of the UK, allowing high pressure to build over us, bringing heat and sunshine to many.
However, later this week, the jet stream will move southwards, which will herald a change to a big drop in temperature along with wind and rain.
Scotland and Northern Ireland
The week will start on a fairly settled note. Whilst cloud amounts will tend to vary, most places will see some sunshine.
North west Scotland will be the exception, where it is going to be breezy with cloud and rain at times.
It’s this cloud and rain that will move across all areas during Wednesday, to be followed by cooler weather with sunshine and showers for Thursday and Friday.
Temperatures will start the week at 18-25C, before falling back to 15-18C from midweek onwards.
England and Wales
Most places will be dry, sunny and warm until Thursday, before cloud, heavy showers and fresher air sweeps in overnight into Friday.
Temperatures are likely to be in the range of 20-28C until Thursday, with the hottest weather in eastern England, where locally it could reach 29C. Friday will see a big temperature drop, with most places at 15-20C.
