The weekend snow and your pictures

The weekend saw the first widespread snow of this winter for many central and eastern parts of the UK, with 5-10cm falling widely – and locally more.

Church Fenton in North Yorkshire had the greatest amount of lying snow recorded at an official weather station, with 16cm.

Whilst there was a disruptive side to the wintry weather, with road, rail and airline networks affected, lots of you took advantage of the snow to take pictures, build snowmen and go sledging.

I’ve had some great pictures and weather reports over the past couple of days on Twitter, which I have really appreciated. It was very useful to get a picture of what was happening across the UK as the snow fell.

There’s no more notable snow expected over the next couple of days, but it’s expected to turn quite cold again for much of the UK, with temperatures barely above freezing by day and widespread hard frosts by night, with ice and fog.

However, the north west of the UK won’t be quite as cold, with more cloud here accompanied by occasional rain and a little snow.
