Michael Mates dodges Dolphin Square questions
I finally caught up with Michael Mates on camera today, on what was really the first full day of his campaign as Conservative candidate for police commissioner in Hampshire.
He was in the small, attractive town of Odiham in the north east of the county, and didn’t welcome my attention when I suddenly appeared.
“I’ve nothing to say to you on camera, or on microphone, now or ever,” he said several times.
He insisted my persistent questions about his cash windfall from Dolphin Square were a matter for the Hampshire voters. When I suggested to him that he ought to lay out all the facts for the voters, he said he would do so.
Here’s is the full video of our exchanges. My film will be on Channel 4 News tonight at 6.30pm.
