It powered the industrial revolution and heated millions of homes – but coal has also fuelled the climate crisis – while also leaving behind a vast network of flooded, unused mines.

But what if that abandoned infrastructure could be used to build a greener and cleaner future?

In Gateshead they’re doing just that – using water pumped out of mines to heat buildings and homes.
