Six people confirmed dead after bin lorry crash in Glasgow

Police say six people were killed after a bin lorry crashed into a group of pedestrians in Glasgow’s George Square as the city was crowded with Christmas shoppers.

Emergency services were called to a “serious incident” at around 2.30pm in Glasgow city centre involving a bin lorry.

Police say the lorry travelled around 300 metres along the pavement hitting several pedestrians. The driver has been taken to hospital and is receiving treatment.

Police said at least seven people have been “seriously injured”.

A Police Scotland spokesman confirmed there is an “ongoing serious incident” in Glasgow’s George Square close to Queen Street Station. Roads surrounding George Square, in the city centre, have been closed.

The lorry crashed into the side of the Millennium Hotel, which is next to the station. As many as six ambulances are at the scene, along with the police and fire service.

Pinballs

Witness Melanie Greg told Sky News: “The bin lorry just lost control. It went along the pavement, knocking everyone like pinballs. There was a baby in a buggy, and it just continued knocking people down until it ended up in the building. Quite horrific, very scary.

“The only way it stopped was hitting the building. People were trying to run out of the way. But when something was coming out behind them like that, how can they run out of the way? It was such a horrific thing.”

Glasgow crash

Superintendent Stewart Carle, of Police Scotland, said at the scene: “It’s a road traffic accident, nothing more sinister. For now it does not look to be a criminal or deliberate act that has taken place here this afternoon, but we need to have time to investigate it.”

Supt Carle said he could not comment on reports that the driver had collapsed at the wheel.

Police Scotland have set up a number for anyone who has concerns that their family and friends may be involved in the incident which is 01786 289070.
