Chancellor unveils new scheme to save jobs

Political Editor

Rishi Sunak has unveiled his plan to protect jobs through the winter.

He told MPs that the coronavirus was making permanent changes to the economy and it was “fundamentally wrong” to try to protect jobs that would not be viable when the furlough scheme ends in a month’s time.

Instead, his new scheme will boost the wages of workers who are still working but have had their hours cut.

The costs will be shared between employers and the Government.
