Chaotic Calais: migrants struggle to get to UK

Paraic O’Brien has been on patrol with the police in Calais as they remove people from lorries headed for the UK.

Day after night, the police are trying to stop the stowaways. They hide inside lorries or cling on underneath.

Paraic O’Brien spoke to one man from Pakistan who fell out of one lorry when it was stopped by police. The 65-year-old clutched his leg in pain and said he was too old to be stowing away to the UK. He was doing it, he said, because he didn’t “have anything” else.

David Cameron said the scenes of migrants trying to jump on to lorries was “totally unacceptable” but said that Britain had to work with France and that there was “no point either side trying to point the finger of blame.”
