Charities fight to get in on the Olympic act

Presenter

Corporate giants aren’t the only ones hitching their wagons to the great Olympic train. Charities have realised the potential benefits of getting their message under the London2012 media spotlight.

Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics (ITN)

One of those involved is the former Eurythmics front man Dave Stewart. His new song has been adopted as the official theme of a US government campaign – “Walk a Mile” – which aims to promote tolerance, stop bigotry and raise money for charity. The charity has been recognised by the Olympic Truce committee which is a branch of the London 2012 Games.

Closer to home Dave Stewart has teamed up with a choir from north London who got together to rebuild their community in Tottenham after it was torn apart by rioting. They’ve now recorded a song which will be showcased at an Olympic flame ceremony on Wednesday.

But he admits that to be heard over the corporate hubbub, you have to do something “remarkable”.

I went to meet him along with the Gladesmore Community School choir on Tuesday to hear more about the project.
