China warns US support for Taiwanese independence is ‘playing with fire’

China’s President Xi has warned President Joe Biden that encouraging Taiwanese independence would be “playing with fire”, adding for good measure that “those who play with fire get burned”.

During the most extensive talks yet between the two leaders, Mr Biden cautioned against undermining peace and stability, and said any rivalry must not “veer into open conflict”.
