Chinese Nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo dies in custody aged 61

The Nobel prize-winner and Chinese political prisoner Liu Xiaobo has died. He was several years into his 11 year sentence for his contribution to a pro-democracy manifesto which called for the end to China’s one-party rule.

When he was diagnosed with late stage liver cancer there were international calls for him to be moved to either Germany or the US for treatment. But these were denied.
