A crockery firm which mistook Barack Obama for England footballer Chris Smalling – and plastered a picture of the US president on thousands of mugs – has given footy fans some much-needed amusement.
Wholesale Clearance UK, a Dorset-based company, has taken on the task of shifting the 2,000 cups after a junior staff member at a local merchandise organisation, which unsurprisingly wishes to remain anonymous, made the pictorial error that somehow managed to be signed off without anyone noticing.
Karl Baxter, managing director of Wholesale Clearance UK, said the mugs have garnered a lot of attention since being advertised on the website. “We’re now hitting a million hits an hour worldwide. The phones haven’t stopped either. I even received a call from a television channel in China this morning.”
Baxter says he’s looking “to do some good” with the cups. “We’d love to give about 1,000 of them to charities. So any charities reading this are welcome to a free mug or two.”
The company is also selling individual cups at £11.99 apiece for those England supporters who would like to remember the blunder. If the sight of Obama in an England strip with the words “Chris Smalling – World Cup squad Brazil 2014” fails to brighten up your early morning caffeine fix, we’re not sure what will.
