Conservative MPs fear government’s overseas aid target will be scrapped

A growing number of Conservative MPs, including the former international development secretary, Andrew Mitchell, have  condemned plans by the Treasury to suspend the government’s long standing target to spend 0.7% of gross national income on overseas aid.

Ministers have said it is “legitimate” to look for savings when the pandemic has put public finances under such strain.
