Conservatives and Labour under pressure to explain NHS plans

Cathy Newman: An independent health think tank has accused both the Conservatives and Labour of setting out unrealistic funding for NHS England in their manifestos.

The Nuffield Trust said the Conservative and Labour proposals represented an unprecedented slowdown in NHS finances.

Separately, Labour came under further scrutiny for a lack of explicit funding for social care, with one Labour candidate saying he wished his party’s social care proposals had been more ambitious.

The latest polls made grim reading for the Tories – one predicting they would secure just over 70 seats, and another showing a drop of 4 points.

But none repeated last week’s poll showing support for reform was higher.
