Container ship blocking Suez Canal may be stuck for weeks

Salvage engineers have warned that the Suez Canal could stay blocked by a stranded giant container ship for days – or possibly weeks.

The Ever Given, which is a quarter of a mile long, became wedged across the busy shipping route during a sandstorm on Tuesday.

It is operated by shipping company Evergreen Marine and is one of the world’s largest vessels.

Engineers have been trying to remove sand and soil around its bow and stern and pull it free on high tides.
