It has been an emotional, poignant day in Portsmouth. The ceremony around lunchtime included speeches and readings from world leaders, but by far the warmest applause of the day was reserved for the veterans themselves as they took the stage.
There are not many left who can recall the horror of D-Day first hand, most of them pushing 100 years old or more, and this may very well be the final time a major anniversary of this significant day is marked in the presence of the men who were there.
