Following mounting pressure from MPs from all parties, yesterday’s budget included measures to address some backbench criticisms over the way the new Universal Credit system is being rolled out. Many claimants have struggled to cope with long waits for the payments to come through. Today the Work and Pensions Secretary David Gauke announced that from next February, claimants would go on being paid housing benefit for two weeks after they apply for Universal Credit.
