Yesterday the scene of a spectacle never before witnessed in America: that of a former president hunched over a courtroom table, flanked by lawyers as criminal charges were read out to him by a judge.

An unforgettable image blazoned across every front page, perhaps placing Donald Trump exactly where he wants to be – front and centre of this nation’s consciousness, heading into a presidential race next year.

After leaving court, Mr Trump returned to Florida – telling his supporters that America was ‘going to hell’ from the gold clad ballroom of his Mar-a-Lago estate, decrying the charges against him and the people who brought them.
