DR Congo: Volcano eruption forces thousands to flee as lava destroys homes

Thousands of people have fled their homes in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo after lava from an erupting volcano reached the outskirts of a major city.

Around 500 homes on the edge of Goma were destroyed by lava as Mount Nyiragongo erupted in the middle of the night, with at least five people killed in a car crash as they tried to leave. Officials said it was still too soon to confirm the number of casualties
