Easter weddings: for love or money (1961) – ITN archive

The charming ITN archive catalogue card for this item on Easter weddings from 1 April 1961 is titled: “Was it to get a rebate?”

To get an answer to this burning question, Barbara Mandell was sent off to East India Dock Road in Poplar, to interview a trio of newlyweds as they emerged from All Saints church, writes Ian Searcey.

Led out of the church by the vicar, the first couple seem pretty clear as to why they chose that day: “It’s the tax rebate, innit?” says the husband, adding that while he has not worked out how much rebate he will get, he is “hoping for a good bit”.

His new wife agrees with Mandell that Easter is a romantic time to get married, despite being teased about it being 1 April.

As the second groom is a soldier, an Easter wedding was less to do with sophisticated advanced financial planning and more to do with the fact he is on leave. They had little choice about the actual day, he explains, it was the only time they could get before he had to return to Germany.

“So nothing to do with tax reduction?” asks Mandell.

“Makes no difference,” he jokes. “I got nothing anyway!”

The third couple picked the day to take advantage of the long weekend.

“Tax doesn’t worry us,” says the bride. “We thought that we would have it so that everyone could have Monday to get over the excitement.”

It seems to me that romance probably just about pipped the taxman…

Champagne and wedding cake all round!
