Ecuador declares state of emergency after presidential candidate shot dead

A state of emergency has been declared in Ecuador after a presidential candidate was murdered during a campaign rally in the capital Quito.

Former journalist Fernando Villavicencio was gunned down shortly after a speech to young supporters – promising them he would root out corruption and tackle the country’s “thieves”.

Ecuador’s president blamed organised crime, and insisted the elections would still go ahead.
