Ed Miliband pelted with eggs in London market

Labour leader Ed Miliband was pelted with eggs by a lone protester during a campaign visit to a street market in south London today.

The protester who ambushed Ed Miliband in a London market today pelting him with eggs has told Channel 4 News he was protesting against poverty and homelessness.

Dean Porter, 38, from Southwark, was wrestled to the ground by security after hitting the Labour leader with a number of eggs.

He claims he was trying to highlight the lack of care for the homeless, having previously been homeless himself.

Mr Miliband reacted calmly to the incident, an aide removed his stained jacket and he carried on with his tour of the market, chatting to shoppers and stallholders.

Speaking after he was removed by security Mr Porter stated; “What has he done? Has he moved towards getting homelessness resolved? I was homeless on and off for five years.”

“I heard he was down, it was an opportunity…it was an opportunist moment, I live local.”

Mr Porter called for less money to be given to bankers and for more to be distributed to poor people.

Mr Miliband was making his first public appearance since returning from his summer holiday and was addressing concerns over the “cost of living crisis”.
