Online advertising is a major money spinner for the tech giant Google. But an ongoing investigation by the European Commission has accused Google of abusing its dominant position by favouring its own ads at the expense of its rivals.
The Commission’s Vice President Margarete Vestager says what she termed Google’s ‘pervasive conflicts of interest’ can only be solved by forcing a breakup of the company’s ad sales operations. Google says it’s doing nothing wrong and will ‘respond accordingly’.
