Evan Gershkovich: Why was US journalist arrested by Russian authorities?

The Russian foreign ministry has said it’s still considering whether to allow consular access to the American Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was arrested last week.

The White House and the Wall Street Journal have strenuously denied Russian allegations that he was a spy.

Today, a court in Moscow said it would hear an appeal to determine where the journalist will be held and whether to grant him bail.

But the case may have less to do with the law and more with geopolitics.
