Fake News: Google searches and what they tell us

All week we’ve been looking into the ramifications of the “Fake News” phenomenon.

But misleading information appears to go well beyond news and can sometimes be found at the heart of the platform the majority of us use to access the internet. When you start typing something in to the Google search box, it offers suggestions and at times these can be profoundly offensive.

Journalist Carole Cadwalladr has been investigating why extreme and controversial ideas and results crop up and what, if anything, Google can do about it.
