Family urges peace after protesters clash with police in London

The family of a black man who died after being apprehended by the police have appealed for peace on the streets after unrest broke out in the wake of his death. Rashan Charles, who was 20, died in Dalston, east London, a week ago.

His father, Esa, spoke at a vigil this afternoon alongside Ginario Da Costa, whose son Edson died in June, six days after being detained by the police.

Police have said that anyone who uses Rashan Charles’s death “as an excuse to commit crime” would be “dealt with robustly”.

Angry clashes broke out yesterday as protesters blocked part of Kingsland Road and set bins alight. A spokesman for Rashan Charles’s family has said “burning down homes” would not bring justice.
