The pioneering Radio 1 DJ Annie Nightingale has died at the age of 83 – as fellow stars paid tribute, calling her the “original trailblazer” for women in radio.
The presenter Annie Mac said Nightingale had smashed through sexist stereotypes and changed the face and sound of British broadcasting forever. Radio 2’s Jo Whiley called her the “coolest woman who ever graced the airwaves”.
