Five die crossing the Channel hours after Rwanda bill passes

It’s supposed to stop people risking their lives crossing the channel to Britain.

But the threat of being put on a flight to Rwanda didn’t stop several more boats attempting the perilous journey across the maritime equivalent of the M25.

Rishi Sunak says the government is acting out of compassion, to stop more tragedies like the one today, but campaigners say deportation to Rwanda is cruel and probably won’t work.
