Five teenagers die after a crash late on Saturday night involving two cars in Conisbrough, near Doncaster.
A 21-year-old man from Doncaster has been arrested by South Yorkshire police on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He was believed to have been the driver of a third vehicle, which may have been involved in the incident.
Police said that three males and two females died from their injuries. They were named as Bartosz Bortniczak, 18, Blake Cairns, 16, Arpad Kore, 18, Jordanna Goodwin, 16 and Megan Storey, 16. All the teenagers were from the Doncaster area.
The teenagers died when the Toyota they were travelling in collided with a Seat vehicle on the A630 road just outside Conisbrough. The man driving the Seat suffered from a broken leg.
Weather in the area last night was extremely foggy, but police said it was too early to say whether that had any bearing on the incident. This morning, the only evidence of the crash was a police sign appealing for information about the crash.
Inspector Pete Serhatlic of South Yorkshire police said: “There were five occupants of the Toyota Corolla aged between 16 and 18 years old.
“Tragically all these five young people have now lost their lives.”
South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue attended the scene last night and later tweeted: “We send our deepest condolences to the families affected by the fatal RTC we attended last night.”
The scene of the crash is just metres away from the site of an accident in which three teenagers were killed in 2011.
“It’s the second multiple fatality within a short space of time but it’s not really a location where you consistently get road traffic collisions of a serious nature,” said inspector Serhatlic.
“It’s just that the ones you do get on that stretch of road seem to, unfortunately, involve multiple deaths.”
