Former Scottish first minister and SNP leader Alex Salmond dies

He was a giant of Scottish politics; charismatic, and for some, divisive –  Alex Salmond helped turn the SNP into a party of power.

For decades he led the campaign for independence for Scotland – coming within touching distance at the 2014 referendum. It also led to his fall from the top, but love him or loathe him, his death has sent shockwaves through the political world.
