It’s the biggest single election in Europe.
Earlier this week the French centre-right unexpectedly rejected the bigger names running to be their nominee in next year’s presidential election – including Brexit negotiator, Michael Barnier.
Today they chose Valérie Pécresse, a more centrist candidate, over a right-wing challenger.
She joins already announced two far-right candidates, a socialist candidate, a green candidate and a far-left candidate, making her potentially more of a threat to President Emmanuel Macron’s centre ground than the others.
